Description
The purpose of the Mallinckrodt Pressure Infusion Chamber is to apply pressure to a bag of blood or IV fluid to facilitate intravenous injection at higher flow rates than those achieved by gravity alone. Pressure is automatically maintained on the bag as the fluid empties. The user controls the flow rate using the knurled clamp on the infusion tubing. The maximum flow rate depends on the fluid's viscosity, the characteristics of the infusion tubing and the pressure applied.
The Mallinckrodt Pressure Infusion Chamber is designed for rapid injections of blood, blood products or other fluids in cases of trauma or surgery where a precise flow rate is not required. Typical flow rates for such applications are up to 700ml per minute, depending on the infusion set and catheter used. This is a much higher flow rate than for ordinary infusions. The Mallinckrodt Pressure Infusion Chamber is contraindicated for the injection of strong drugs (which must be injected in precise doses).
The Mallinckrodt Pressure Infusion Chamber is generally used in the Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit or Emergency Department, but not for patient transport. In these high-tech departments, patients are closely monitored, so the use of devices without monitoring facilities is not contraindicated.
